At Art Basel Hong Kong 2013, Paradise Row presents a solo presentation of key works by Shezad Dawood. Incorporating film, neon and textile works, the display will showcase three major strands of Dawood's practice.
Trailer is a 15 minute alternative cut of the artist's feature length film, Piercing Brightness, playing on the cinematic convention of the 'trailer'. Using techniques of splicing and montage, he creates a constellation of images and sequences that form a fragmented, non- linear narrative, through which to reflect on notions of race, migration and place.
Equinox is a major neon work comprising of related geometric forms. It plays on the underlying balance in Tantra that is present in the vernal and autumnal equinox when day and night are of equal length.
Paradise Row will additionally present a selection of Dawood's textile paintings which subtly incorporate imagery from the domestic spaces of Dawood's family homes, so performing an elliptical meditation on memory, image and matter.
Shezad Dawood (b.1974, London) trained at Central St Martin's and the Royal College of Art. His work explores the multiple possibilities engendered by the play between cultures, histories and fictions. Working across film, neon and painting, Dawood questions the process of image making and dissemination, moving through various points of identification and visual systems such as science fiction and the occult.
In 2011, he was awarded the Abraaj Capital Art Prize. His work has been shown in exhibitions internationally including 'Altermodern', curated by Nicolas Bourriaud, at the Tate Britain (2009); the 53rd Venice Biennale (2009), and the Busan Biennale in Korea (2010). In April 2012, Modern Art Oxford presented a first solo museum exhibition of Dawood's works. Upcoming projects include 'The World Turned Inside Out', Witte de With, Rotterdam (2013), 'Doris Duke's Shangri La', Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach (2013), 'Sous nos yeux', MACBA and a solo exhibition at Parasol Unit, London (both 2014). He currently lives and works in London.
