Shezad Dawood, Mullah Nasrudin, 2014, Acrylic on vintage textile, 177 x 131 cm

My advice to people today is as follows; if you take the game of life seriously, if you take your nervous system seriously, if you take your sense organs seriously, if you take your energy process seriously, you must turn on, tune in and drop out.

Timothy Leary, The Game of Life (1979)

For Art Los Angeles Contemporary, Paradise Row presents a series of text paintings by Shezad Dawood based on Timothy Leary's seminal book, The Game of Life.

Bringing together everything from evolutionary theory and Eastern mysticism to tarot and neurology, Leary's book united the heady theories and experiments of the 1960s counterculture that gave voice to new-age philosophies, psychotropic substances and civil and sexual rights.

Similarly, Dawood takes Leary's book to explore his own vital interests in counterculture and esoteric knowledge emphasising the importance of hidden or unexpected connections between disparate bodies of knowledge. A select number of new and related bronze works created by Shezad Dawood will also be presented at the fair.

Shezad Dawood (b.1974, London) trained at Central St Martin's and the Royal College of Art. His work explores the multiple possibilities engendered by the play between cultures, histories and fictions. Working across film, neon and painting, Dawood questions the process of image making and dissemination, moving through various points of identification and visual systems such as science fiction and the occult. He currently lives and works in London.
